Today’s photo of the day shows the old Hampden Park in all its packed terracing glory. 126,102 fans packed into the national stadium for the 1967 Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen, with newspapers of the time reporting that 30,000 more people forced their way into the ground without tickets.
The sight of such huge masses of people in attendance as the Bhoys secured yet another trophy is incredible.
In our chosen image, Bobby Lennox features in the action shot, but it is the background of the picture which really captures the attention.

Celtic won the match 2-0 courtesy of a second half brace from Willie Wallace.
My first cup final, I was in that wee stand opposite the main stand. In the front row, it would have been some drop if I had tumbled over the edge.
My Mum and I were one of the 30,000! We had gone to the stadium early to try and get a Stand Ticket, but, as time got nearer KO I noticed to the right of the main stand a large gate where a man was allowing people into the ground who seem to be young boys accompanied by an adult. I was 12 at the time and asked my Mum to follow me as I thought I had seen someone selling tickets :)) As we approached the gate I nodded to the gentleman and said hello, to my wonderful surprise he opened the gate and me and my mum walked through. On the other side, I herded my mum to the right and into the “Celtic End” all this time my mum is asking me where does she pay!!! :))) Great memories, great score, great team!
That’s a great story Alex. Brilliant memories to cherish. Always hold my Celtic memories with my parents close, and hope to make more. Plenty with my Dad, but Mum isn’t so big on football. But that all changed when we went to Lazio away and my Dad’s ticket to go was to dress it up as a weekend in Rome and invite my mum. So she ended up coming to the match and loved it.
Vivid memories of standing near the bottom of the Celtic End and seeing Willie Wallace’s second goal coming straight towards me, then the net bulging and about a dozen people on my back!
The fans going home were all singing “We’re off to Lisbon in the green” I tried to sing the add-on words “With Jock Stein”, but was drowned out by the other more lurid and even for 1967 revolutionary words!
A great day!
Crazy to think the same person is still in that position now and receiving the same lurid/revolutionary words.
