Robert Rowan RIP

Not everyone would have known Robert Rowan, the technical director of Brenford FC who died tragically this week at the age of 28.

I can claim to have known him but slightly, but I know that he was Celtic through and through. Before he moved to London, he lived in Kirkcaldy with this parents, and his mother, whom I know well, still lives there.

Robert travelled once or twice on the Joseph Rafferty Celtic Supporters Bus from Kirkcaldy, and it was my privilege to drive him once in 2010 to Lochgelly to attend a meeting of local supporters to meet Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon.

I was impressed then by this young man’s deep technical knowledge of the game, and was delighted to hear of his appointment to Brentford.

But he also did some scouting for Celtic, and I’m sure that Celtic Park would have been the intended destination of his career. A medical condition prevented him from playing the game, but his knowledge of the game was second to none.

He is a great loss to the footballing world, not least to Celtic, and our thoughts go out to his family at this dreadful time.
