“There’s nothing wrong with winning,” Postecoglou’s Post-Match Verdict

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou declared himself well satisfied with both the win and the performance of his young stars after his squad – minus many of its international stars – defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at the Dragon Park in South Wales. The new Celtic manager was joined in the Celtic dug-out with both  John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan, although there was little evidence that the former Peterborough Assistant Manager had his laptop with him today.

Going behind in the early stages to a goal from former theRangers striker Josh Windass was hardly the ideal start for these young Hoops but gradually they found their feet in the match. The game was divided into 3 x 30 minute blocks at the request of the English side and Postecoglou started with Barkas; Ralston, Welsh, Murray, Montgomery, Soro, Shaw, McInroy, Moffat, Henderson and Ajeti, who captained the side. The only change at around 45 minutes was Bain for Barkas in the Celtic goal but on the hour the ten outfield players were replaced by O’Connor, Murray, Hjelde, McPherson, Connell, Otoo, Robertson, Afolabi, Coffey, Edouard.

By that time Celtic were in the lead with goals from Ajeti and young Academy winger Moffat who was a standout. A late goal from the hitherto quiet Odsonne Edouard sealed the win for the Australian boss.

Afterwards Ange gave his post match thoughts to Celtic TV as he looked ahead to the game against Charlton at the weekend and the return of his international stars to the match day squad. “We’ll see how everyone is, obviously the lads who played today were the ones who have been with us from the start,” Postecoglou stated.

“We’ve just got to make sure we don’t throw guys in too early but looking at the international boys and some of the others, they’ve come back in good condition. So I think they’ll play a part on the weekend.”

It’s early days for Ange as he imposes a new playing style on the quad but there was plenty for him to smile about this afternoon. “To be fair they worked hard, we didn’t have a great start to the game. We took a while to get into it, we had a solid session yesterday and the boys probably felt it a little bit.

“But we grew into the game and to their credit I thought the better part of the first half and then definitely the second half we played some decent stuff and scored a couple of good goals and finished strongly,” the Celtic manager said.

“We’ve been working hard in training and part of it is that we want to make sure we continue to play at a certain tempo for the whole game, we don’t drop off. That’s why we’re working hard and I thought second half we maintained that and got our rewards in the end with Albi and Moff scoring a good goal.

“Aside from that it was good to see the young boys, because it would have been very easy for them after the start we had to go into their shells and not be as positive but they reacted really well and that’s a good sign.

“There’s nothing wrong with winning, and particularly in the manner we did because we didn’t start well, we didn’t play well and we go a goal down.

“But it kind of shows you that there’s a bit of spirit within the boys that they weren’t prepared to accept that, which is a positive sign.”
