Trondheim the venue for Celtic’s UEFA Women’s Champions League Debut

Celtic’s UEFA Women’s Champions League group 3 matches will take place in Trondheim in Norway next month, the club has announced. All matches in the group featuring The Hoops, making their first ever appearance in the prestigious competition, Spanish side Levante, Minsk of Belarus and hosts Rosenborg with take place in Trondheim, a well-known European destination for Celtic.

The one-venue mini tournament will kick off on Wednesday 18 August when Celtic play Levante and Rosenborg face Minsk, with the Group final and third place play-off to be played on Saturday 21 August.

“And we are off to Trondheim! Rosenborg will host our one-venue Group 3 mini tournament, where we face Levante in semi-final one on 18 August! Any local recommendations, @celticfc?” the Celtic FC Women tweeted this morning.

After going on a tremendous 13-match unbeaten run to secure their place amongst Europe’s elite, Fran Alonso’s squad are hoping to progress through to Round Two. The toughest challenge will clearly come from the Spanish outfit who finished third in the Primera División.

Fran Alonso will hopefully be looking at bringing in some experienced players at this level so that Celtic can kick-on from last season’s brilliant showing from his young side. The loss of Anna Filbey, who was a free agent after being released by Tottenham, is a real blow as she was a stand-out during that remarkable SWPL run in that saw Celtic beat theRangers to the second Champions spot and take title winners Glasgow City to the last day before they won the league.

Incidentally Aberdeen have been promoted to the SWPL1 next season after running away with the SWPL2 title this season and the second promotion spot will be decided today in the last round of fixtures. Hamilton need a win to be guaranteed promotion with both Dundee Utd and Partick Thistle in with a shout depending on how results go elsewhere.
