19th February – Five Memorable Celtic Moments on This Day

Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting in 1916…

Patsy Gallacher

ONE – SATURDAY 19 FEBRUARY 1916 – Celtic have been sweeping all before them this season, but today they have a tighter game than normal against Queen’s Park at Hampden, and are indebted to a Patsy Gallacher goal in the second half for their narrow victory. The war is now changing with the arrival of conscription, something that will cause trouble in both Glasgow and Ireland.

Tommy McInally scored twice

TWO – SATURDAY 19 FEBRUARY 1921 – It is Celtic’s first ever visit to Methil to play East Fife in the Scottish Cup. Intense local interest is aroused, and the 11,000 crowd see a good game but Celtic win 3-1 with two goals from “the boy wonder” Tommy McInally and one from Patsy Gallacher.

Jimmy McGrory

THREE – SATURDAY 19 FEBRUARY 1927 – Goals from Jimmy McGrory, Adam McLean, Paddy Connolly and Willie McStay see Celtic beat Dundee 4-2 in the Scottish Cup at Dens Park before a mammoth crowd of 37,471. Ex-favourite Joe Cassidy (who had scored the goal that won the Scottish Cup in 1923), now near the end of his career, is playing for Dundee and making little impact on the Celtic defence. Celtic fans sing the Negro slave song “Poor Old Joe”, but it is inspired by affection rather than mockery.

Maciej Zurawski scores his first of the afternoon

FOUR – SUNDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2006 – Celtic create a new SPL record when they beat the hapless Dunfermline 8-1 at East End Park. Maciej Zurawski scores four, and Stilian Petrov, John Hartson, Shaun Maloney and Neil Lennon (a rare event for Neil) one each. 9,017 fans and the TV audience this Sunday afternoon are very impressed.

Gary Hooper scored twice

SUNDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2012 – Celtic and their supporters are in buoyant mood today at Easter Road with the news of Rangers entering administration this week and celebrate with a 5-0 tanking of Hibs. Gary Hooper scores twice and the other goals come from Charlie Mulgrew, Anthony Stokes and Ki Sung Yueng.
