24th March – Five Memorable Celtic Moments on This Day

Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting in 1917…

Patsy Gallacher missed out on the trip to Aberdeen

ONE – SATURDAY 24 MARCH 1917 – The logistics of war time transport mean that Celtic have to play at Pittodrie without McMenemy and Gallacher, but nevertheless they earn a creditable 0-0 draw before 7,000, which is the biggest crowd of Aberdeen’s season. Celtic remain five points ahead of Rangers, but the big news is still what has happened in Russia where the Czar has, apparently, been deposed.

Frank Brogan scored twice

TWO – SATURDAY 24 MARCH 1962 – In a game which eccentrically kicks off at 3.30 in an attempt to get a larger crowd, Celtic beat Aberdeen 2-0 with both goals coming from the grossly undervalued Frank Brogan. The crowd of 20,000 is about the Parkhead average, but they are all given a boost by the news that Dundee United have beaten Rangers.

THREE – SATURDAY 24 MARCH 1973 – Celtic maintain their challenge for the title with a fine 2-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle. with goals from Dixie Deans and Bobby Lennox. But Rangers also win, beating Hibs at Ibrox meaning that they are still two points ahead, although Celtic have a game in hand.

FOUR – SUNDAY 24 MARCH 1991 – Having defeated Rangers in the Scottish Cup last week, Celtic now proceed to do it again in the Scottish League this week, but this week only one Rangers player Scott Nisbett is sent off! Celtic win comfortably 3-0 with goals from Anton Rogan, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne. Sadly this welcome upturn in form comes too late to save the season or Billy McNeill from the sack.

Robbie Keane
Robbie Keane makes his way off the pitch as he and his Celtic teammates suffer defeat at the hands of St Mirren

FIVE – WEDNESDAY 24 MARCH 2010 – Tony Mowbray’s short and unsatisfactory reign as Celtic manager is effectively brought to an end by a comprehensive and humiliating 0-4 defeat at St.Mirren Park. The incredulous Buddies (who on the previous Sunday lost the Scottish League Cup final to nine man Rangers!) simply cannot believe their luck as Celtic, deficient in every respect, crumble before them. The sheer folly of dismantling a team and trying to rebuild it in the January window is now apparent to all. Even the news that Dundee United have beaten Rangers in the Scottish Cup quarter-final does little to cheer up the disheartened troops.
