“Who?” – Jota fails to recognise former Rangers striker during BBC interview

Footage has emerged of our superstar from Portugal, Jota being questioned by the BBC after Celtic’s match with St Mirren today in Paisley and being asked if he recognised former Rangers and St Mirren striker Steven Thompson. Jota got on the scoresheet today as the Hoops ran out comfortable 5-1 winners.

The interview in question took place within the stadium and that interviewer asked the former Benfica winger if he recognised the former footballer turned pundit and presenter Thompson. Thompson signed for Rangers in 2003 and played for the club before moving to a clutch of English club’s before finally arriving back in Scotland in 2011 with St Mirren.

Thompson scored 44 goals in his five-year spell in Paisley in which he amassed 154 appearances for the club. He then retired and has been a pundit on BBC Sportscene since his playing days, recently replacing Jonathan Sutherland as the host of the national broadcasters Scottish football highlights show every Sunday.

However, when Jota was asked to identify the former Dundee United and Scotland centre-forward, he was unsure what to say and it made for quite an awkward interaction. The polite Portuguese trickster then eventually had to give up the game, saying: “Who? I am sorry mate, who is he, who is he? I am sorry.” Thompson could apparently be heard laughing from the gantry up above the Celtic star, so it was all in good humour.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

Thompson’s career would have been coming to an end when Jota was living in another country and about seven years old.
It isn’t as if Thompson was one of Scottish football’s all time greats.
Why would he know who he was.
