Video Rewind – The last time Celtic faced Kilmarnock in the League Cup

Celtic head to Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon to take on whinging Derek McInnes and his Kilmarnock side. It’s a change of pace from the Scottish Premiership campaign this early in the season having only played two league fixtures in August so far.

The last time we played the Ayrshire outfit in the League Cup was at Hampden Park in last season’s Semi-final. We emerged victorious from that one despite a scare when it was in the balance at 1-0. But, as we always do, we found a way to goal and sent ourselves into a Cup Final against theRangers on 26 February last season.

Daizen Maeda opened the scoring with a goal he didn’t know much about when an Aaron Mooy delivery to the back post caught just about everyone off guard. It was fortuitous on the night that it managed to hit off of Maeda, but you need to be in the right areas as they say, so he made his own luck it has to be said.

After waiting a while for the second, we managed to seal the deal with a Giorgos Giakoumakis goal which he couldn’t really miss, when it fell at his feet after the Killie goalkeeper saved a shot and it ricocheted back out right to the Greek striker’s feet. It was another poachers’ finish from Giakoumakis and put us on course for our first trophy en-route to a domestic Treble.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
