Celtic On This Day – 29th August – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic related events relevant to each day, today covering 29 August…

SATURDAY 29 AUGUST 1903

The Scottish Referee on Monday makes the first ever mention of Celtic’s impressive new strips of green and white horizontal stripes. It makes then look younger and faster. Unfortunately the new strip does not bring a victory, for Third Lanark who have now signed Johnny Campbell and will in fact win the League this season, beat Celtic 3-1 at Parkhead, Celtic’s only goal coming from Alec Bennett.

Celtic record a splendid 3-0 victory over League Champions Dundee before 28,000 fans at Celtic Park in the League Cup. Charlie Gallacher scores in the first minute, and then John Hughes scores a couple of late goals to win the day for Celtic.

SATURDAY 29 AUGUST 1987

First blood to Celtic in their Centenary Season as they beat Rangers 1-0 at Celtic Park with a goal scored by Billy Stark. The same Billy Stark is the victim of a tackle by Graeme Souness which sees the Rangers player-manager sent off. Incredibly, Stark isn’t even wearing a boot at the time! 60,800 enjoy this game in warm sunshine.

Celtic qualify for the Group Stages of the European Champions League in a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Spartak Moscow. Artur Boruc saves the vital penalty kick. This follows a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, watched by 57,644 in which Scott McDonald put Celtic ahead before the Russians equalized. The first leg in Moscow was also 1-1.

SUNDAY 29 AUGUST 2010

Having been comprehensively beaten 0-4 in Europe in midweek, Celtic cannot have been too happy with this game either, for it took a penalty from Daryl Murphy to break the deadlock at Motherwell and earn a 1-0 win.
