Celtic summer goalkeeping target reveals transfer request to leave Liverpool

Ireland No.1 Caoimhin Kelleher has revealed that he asked to leave Liverpool in the summer. The 25-year-old had been a reported summer transfer target for Celtic but it was expected that he would either remain at Anfield to take over from Allison as Liverpool’s new goalkeeper or be allowed to depart.

However, the Cork-born goalie has revealed that he had asked to depart Anfield in the hunt to become a first choice somewhere else while point out that the club have decided to sign another keeper.

Celtic had been listed as a potential destination for Kelleher but Liverpool reportedly set a £20m transfer price for the Irishman, which was unrealistic for Celtic. The club moved to sign experienced Kasper Schmeichel as well as Vini Sinisalo from Aston Villa as they prepare for the future.

There had been increased speculation that the player would move on this summer with Liverpool’s scouts look at bringing in a replacement for Kelleher to work as understudy to Allison Becker. However, the Brazilian is now expected to remain until the end of the season with Giorgi Mamardashvili set to fill the gloves next season.

Kelleher’s brother played in Celtic’s Academy and repots have suggested that he would have been keen on a move. The big ‘keeper has 26 appearances for Liverpool this season propelling him back into the national team’s starting XI.
