Como to offload Nicolas Kuhn, Kyogo’s post Celtic slump

Serie A side Como are reportedly prepared to consider offers for former Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn ahead of the summer transfer window while Kyogo’s post Celtic misery continues…

The German joined the Italian club in a £17 million deal last July but has struggled to replicate the form that made him a standout performer in Scotland where he made 36 goal contributions for the Hoops last season.

Despite Como’s impressive campaign under Cesc Fabregas, with the club currently sitting fourth and pushing for Champions League qualification, Kuhn has failed to secure a consistent role in the starting lineup.

The 26-year-old has managed just one goal in 20 league appearances, many of which have come as a substitute. He has not featured in a Serie A match since mid-February, further underlining his lack of involvement in recent weeks.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Como would be willing to part ways with Kuhn if suitable bids arrive, with the club’s sporting director said to value the player at just over £10 million – potentially accepting a significant loss less than a year after his arrival.

Fabregas is already believed to be assessing reinforcements, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Algerian international Fares Chaibi among the names under consideration as a possible replacement.

Kyogo’s post Celtic troubles continue

On the topic of ex-Celtic players, Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has clarified that Kyogo Furuhashi’s recent absence from the Blues has not been due to injury.

The Japanese forward has featured sparingly since late January, with only a brief cameo against QPR marking his sole appearance in that period. He has also been left out of the matchday squad in four of Birmingham’s last six fixtures.

Kyogo has endured another difficult season, scoring just once in the Championship, following a challenging spell in France with Rennes after his £10 million move from Celtic.

Davies confirmed that although the striker did suffer a recurrence of a previous shoulder issue earlier in the season, he has since recovered and returned to full training.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, the former Celtic assistant manager addressed the situation surrounding the forward’s limited involvement.

He said: “He had a bit of a shoulder issue a few weeks ago but he’s around and training.”

Celtic supporters will recall the persistent shoulder problem that affected the 31-year-old, with Brendan Rodgers previously noting that the issue originated during Kyogo’s time in Japan.

Grass isn’t always Greener

It appears that there’s an element of truth in that grass isn’t always greener expression. Just ask Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo.

  1. Owen Mullions on

I’ve said all along that, whatever you think of the board, Celtic got away with murder selling Kyogo, Kuhn and Idah for good money. Between them they haven’t managed to hit double figures in goals since they left so why so many fans think we are poorer without them is something I’ll never understand.

  2. Agreed Owen,
The amount of players that leaves ourselves, and go on to have successful trophy winning careers, beyond ourselves, remains at ridiculously low.
Even VVD had to use Southampton before Liverpool.

Admittedly, many can improve there earnings with higher contracts on offer to themselves? Nothing we can do as a club in that regards whatsoever.

Even so, the amount of players who have there most successful period, within there careers?
    Remains with ourselves.
Personally don’t see that trend changing anytime soon either, so don’t understand the amount of moaning attached to such a trend, that’s been in operation within our club for years now?

Operating with a higher turn around in players, will effect stability within a core group within the squad building process. So hoping to get lucky in the transfer market, especially for European competitions, looking like being in place for some time to come imo?

The easiest and best way of trying to solve such an issue, is getting a higher returns within our homegrown requirements. That accounts for nearly a third of a 25man squad, as it currently is, without changing either at present?
Yet we struggling so badly still as a club in that regards. Hardly surprising without much of a development pathway in place within Scottish football on offer, for the potential youngsters.

Still, this season, we had nearly 3 full teams in place for this campaign. Even in place now.
Admittedly, more relevant with such an injury list currently in operation for ourselves.

However, I would like to see far more of our own youngsters used next season, within the 3rd choice options in positions for how our team is going to be set up imo?
Murray and Donovan, have benefited already this season already. Could Doohan also, with getting the no2 keeper position for next season?
Personally believe that keeping a conveyor belt moving moreso with our own youngsters, is the way too go, moreso than bringing in the project youngsters imo?

With a far more compact footballing calendar in place these days. Then an increase in having a 3rd option team is required, especially if injuries and suspensions occur?

So wouldn’t disagree with such a policy getting introduced this season?
But do believe it needs to be managed far better than it was this season, all the same imo?

  3. Doohan’s 28 this month and was only brought back on a guilt trip from Liewwell due to the number of young Celtic careers he has ended. Aidan Rice is the goalie we need to be promoting to 1st team.
