Transfer Latest: Celtic linked with Middlesborough’s Paddy McNair

Celtic have been linked with a move for Middlesborough and Northern Ireland international, Paddy McNair. The versatile player is said to be a target for the Hoops and West Ham, according to Teesside Live.  McNair is a graduate of the famous Manchester United academy and was previously linked with a move to Parkhead when Neil Lennon was manager.

McNair is a bit of a utility man, having the ability to play in both defence and midfield which makes him an appealing target for managers. His time with Middlesborough saw him pick up the Player of the Year award from the club last season. His assured performances have not gone unnoticed outside of the Championship, which has prompted Chris Wilder to come out and say McNair will be a stalwart of his team moving forward.

Teesside Live also claim that Middlesborough are under no pressure to sell either, with the Irishman having another two years to run on his current deal. Although this is true, it is also the reality of football that everyone has their price. If a substantial offer were to come in for Paddy, it would certainly give Middlesborough food for thought.

If Chris Wilder can’t conjur a promotion fight with his new side too, it could be extremely difficult for McNair to pass up the opportunity of career progression elsewhere. Celtic, after all, have the opportunity to gain automatic entry into the Champions League next season with a league title win. I’m sure the glamour would be more than enough to convince most to swap the Championship for Europe’s elite competition.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
