Transfer Latest – Benjamin Siegrist and Alexandro Bernabei deals edge closer

With the signing of free-agent and former Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist seemingly the deal furthest down the line so far, the signing of a back-up goalkeeper could look like Celtic’s ambitions remain limited to holding their domestic position, rather than having genuine ambition to sign first team players with sufficient ability to drive up squad standards with a view to making an impact on Champions League football.

Yet whilst Joe Hart may not lose any sleep over the acquisition of a ‘keeper who was also interesting Preston and Blackpool, Greg Taylor may find Lanus left back and Argentinian Under 19 international Alexandro Bernabei an altogether tougher challenge for the season ahead.

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph Celtic are in advanced negotiations with Siegrist, yet despite an initial knockback the Hoops are also ‘continuing their pursuit’ of Bernabei.

“Celtic are in advanced talks with Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist. They’re also continuing their pursuit of Lanus left-back Alexandro Bernabei. The clubs have so far failed to agree on a valuation for the 21-year-old. Lanus said to be wanting around £4m.”

I’m not sure I ever recall Celtic from making moves in the Argentinian transfer market, but as we look to strengthen the squad moving to new markets for players is welcome news.

Bernabei certainly looks an exciting young prospect, and if the deal is approaching £4m for his talents it would appear this one is more with a view to improving the competition for Taylor at left back rather than providing a simple case of a back-up option, as Siegrist would be to Joe Hart.

Mark Hendry at Football Scotland initially broke the story of Celtic’s links with Bernabei, and it would appear despite the initial bid from Celtic being rejected the Journalist seems confident this one will get over the line as he took to social media to advise – ‘It’s a matter of time with Bernabei’

Benjamin Siegrist may well be a case of visiting an ice-cream shop and coming out with a couple of scoops of vanilla, but the signing of Alexandro Bernabei would at least indicate moves are being made to improve the team and not just fill the squad, and that holding a domestic position is not the extent of the transfer remit for this summer.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
