A reprieve for Mikey Johnston seems unlikely but Liam Scales shows it can happen

Reprieve for Mikey? I Don’t think so but then again look at what’s happened with Liam Scales…

Mikey Johnston starred for the Republic of Ireland alongside his club team mate Liam Scales as the Republic trounced Gibraltar 4-0 last night. Mikey himself got on the scoresheet grabbing his second goal in the colours of his adopted nation.

Granted it was only against the minnows of Gibraltar, but does Mikey’s form at international level give him a chance in Brendan Rodgers squad? Does Brendan have Mikey in his plans going forward? And does he deserve to have a reprieve at Celtic?

I don’t think so, as I personally don’t think Mikey has what it takes to make it at Celtic. He’s 24 and had numerous chances and plus he seems to be made of glass. Harsh? No, he’s spent more time in the treatment table than on the park after all.

His physicality also lets him down along with his decision making so I doubt Brendan has him in his plans going forward. But it’s a question worth debating as our supporters seem to weep over players who score goals when they’ve left us ie Giorgos Giakoumakis. He’s gone but Mikey is still with us and he is clearly a talented player.

All you have to do to appreciate that it’s never too late to make it work provided you are still at the club is to look at Mikey’s international team mate Liam Scales because he has proved that anything is possible. Never say never, but I think in Mikey’s case it’s a way out of reach. I’d have probably said the same thing about Scales in the summer.
