Aberdeen move ahead of Kilmarnock in race to sign Montgomery

Aberdeen look to be about to beat Kilmarnock to the loan signing of Adam Montgomery for the remainder of the season. That’s according to a report from North East newspaper the Press and Journal this evening.

Montgomery is very highly rated at Celtic and has made 18 appearances so far this season, performing at both a domestic level and in European competition, however Ange Postecoglou has been keen to get the player out on loan with the opportunity to play every week, something he’s has less opportunity to do in recent weeks with Celtic.

Initially Derek McInnes and Championship side Kilmarnock looked to be favourites to sign Montgomery, however it appears McInnes would have to offload players from his bloated squad to allow the deal to go ahead, whereby Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass has more room for manoeuvre with Ryan Hedges, Niall McGinn and Austin Samuels all having moved away from Pittodrie in this transfer window.

Aberdeen would certainly be a wise move for Montgomery should he choose to accept the loan option. Not only to Aberdeen play at a far higher level than Killie, they also play a progressive style of football under Stephen Glass, something McInnes would be unlikely to offer, and the Dons also have Scott Brown to help guide the player further.

This particular deal makes a lot of sense for all parties concerned, and for Montgomery his position in the team would be far from a given with Jack MacKenzie a highly rated prospect for Aberdeen. As such some real competition for a starting slot would ensure Adam Montgomery also has to be at his best to secure a starting spot in Stephen Glass’ team for the remainder of the season.
