After Calmac, The Celtic Star man signs new contract at Parkhead

NEWS broke late last night of another significant signing of a new contract at Celtic Park. Just a matter of hours after the brilliant news emerged that Callum McGregor had signed a new contract another Celtic Star man signed on at Parkhead for another year.

Fans started to gather outside the ground late in the evening as rumours swept social media that it was about to happen.

Then the official news was broken by the Celtic Star man himself, yes it’s true, Matt Corr has signed a new deal at Celtic!

Joking aside, this Celtic site is proud to include Matt as one of our top writers and the news that he has now signed on for another year as a Celtic Park Tour Guide is excellent news for everyone who takes the trouble to go on the tour – Matt knows his stuff and is as enthusiast a guide as you could wish for – if you’re on the tour mention The Celtic Star to him and he’ll give you a wee smile!

“I feared the worst when I didn’t feature in Tour Guide Tuesday,” said Matt. “But I’ve been assured I’m part of the plans moving forward.”

Meanwhile earlier in the day Calmac spoke to the media about his new contract which came just a year or so after his most recent extension. That in itself goes to show just how much Brendan Rodgers thinks of the versatile midfielder.

McGregor was clearly as delighted as Matt after putting pen to paper yesterday.

“I don’t want to play anywhere else. Celtic is a massive club, one of the biggest in the world, so to get to play your football here is something incredible and something I’m really proud of. So, when the opportunity came up, I jumped at the chance to sign again.

“There were wee bits of speculation flying about but once the manager spoke to me, there was never a question for me of moving away.

“It’s always been Celtic for me and I’ve been happy here. The last two and a half years have been incredible. We have achieved some history at the club and we want to keep going.

“I’ve been here since I was a kid, from nine years old, so it’s pretty much all I’ve known in terms of football.

“When you look at the stature of this club, it’s one of the biggest institutions in world football. To be a part of that, to be privileged enough to play in front of those fans at a club of this size – you can’t take a decision to leave that lightly. Even for the Premier League.

“When you are getting close to 10IAR, as we are, then with the right work rate and effort from the team, you know you could be part of something amazing.

“In the last two and a half years, we’ve made a lot of history and I’m proud to be have been a part of that. In the amount of time I’m here, I want to keep winning things and being successful.

“We keep pushing. We made it seven trophies in a row for the club for the first time when we won the League Cup earlier this month, so there are wee bits of history to make all the time.

“You have to keep that hunger and mentality to keep doing it.

“I’m enjoying my football, I’m playing well. The manager has come in and really tested me to take my game to the next level. I’ve done that. Now the contract is put to bed, it’s about trying to improve again and get even better.”

McGregor admits that he was surprised to be approached by manager Brendan Rodgers about the prospect of extending his deal having just signed a new contract last year.

Calmac with Super Leigh and his skipper.

“I spoke to the manager a couple of weeks ago and then it got done pretty quickly,” he said.

“I only signed my last contract in September last year, so it’s been quick to get a new one. It’s a bit of surprise. I’ve just been concentrating on playing football and trying to do my best for the team.”
