Ajeti refusing any early release is a blow, but to label him the villain is wrong

Albian Ajeti has reportedly refused a deal to have the remaining year of his contract voided similar to the one that fellow flop Vasils Barkas agreed not so long ago.

Ajeti signed from West Ham back in 2020 with high expectations despite failing at the London club. He was seen as someone with a good pedigree as a Swiss international and good experience at Basel were he had a great reputation in the Swiss league and in European competition, so hopes were obviously high for him to succeed.

It obviously didn’t happen and he never looked like a player who would cut it at Celtic and dare I say it, never looked interested. His record of 9 goals in 47 games testifies to that.

A loan spell at Austrian side Sturm Graz didn’t work out of the Ajeti has he struggled with form and injury, scoring just 3 goals in 15 appearances. He was duly sent back to Glasgow by the Austrian side and is now in limbo as he clearly doesn’t have a future at the club.

An offer to terminate his contract was refused and it looks like he will spend the next year in obscurity if no one comes in for him. He will prove to be an expensive mistake by the club with a reported £5 million being spent on him plus his massive salary, most likely around the twenty thousand a week mark.

He will continue to pick that up for the next year without kicking a ball, but while that may be selfish, it’s the players choice to do so. He signed a contract that Celtic were happy to offer him and that should be honoured.

What is does do though is take a year off his playing career and that is surely going to be something to regret further down the line. But as always money is king in football and Ajeti probably realises that he’ll never been on the kind of money that Celtic are paying him at the moment.

  1. Ajeti remains a mercenary of a footballer with a total lack of ambition.
Still fairly young and seems happy to remain as a wage stealer.
Lenny is better off keeping his trap shut about what goes on within Celtic, as he was responsible for bringing this waster into the club.
