Alonso’s Treble Target but still needs a summer recruitment drive

Fran Alonso gave his first interview of the new season at the Celtic FC Women warm weather training base in Gran Canaria yesterday and was enthusiastic as ever as he looks forward to the new season looking to make yet more history for his Celtic side that the support is certainly falling in love with particularly after watching the Scottish Cup Final on the Pass to Paradise or on BBC Alba.

However for those of at Tynecastle that was something special to behold and a superb way to end the season with a Green and White party in the heart of Midlothian. Joyous it was.

Here’s a flavour of what Fran was saying and you can watch the interview with Celtic TV below…

“We’ve made history for two years in a row and that’s something that the girls should not forget. We should aim always to be a little bit better. It’s going to be difficult, every year it gets harder as the league is better and team’s have more resources so it’s going to be more challenging with more competition in the league.

“So it is going to be tough but we really want to continue making history if we can every year. We are prepared for that. The team is looking very good. We are still missing a few of our players who will join the team when we go back to Glasgow (tomorrow is the last day in Gran Canaria) we are going to be very strong.

“It’s going to be difficult for me to pick the team as we’ve got so many good players. Some of them are going to be on the bench, but they are too good to be on the bench so that’s a good problem to have.

“We want to be in all three competitions to the end and we can win any of them.”

Fran’s enthusiasm is always admirable but with five departures over the summer and just two signings surely there’s a need for a few quality and experienced pros to join the club if we are to push theRangers for the title, given that Celtic fell off the pace in the league title last season and they went through the league title without losing a game?

It’s true that Celtic have experience in abundance with the return of Natalie Ross from long term injury and Lisa Robertson from her season away on loan at Birmingham City but if a credible league campaign is to lead to the title – the little piece of history that Fran Alonso has yet to achieve as Celtic manager – then he should be backed to wheel and deal in the transfer market.

Just like Ange Postecoglou, Fran’s recruitment record over the past two and a half years has been excellent. Let’s hope there’s some summer signings just around the corner.

They are going to be needed.
