An August Plan for the Scottish Cup 2020

Maybe I am being absurdly optimistic, but there is surely a way to playing the 2020 Scottish Cup sometime in early August, is there not? I am confident that by August, there will be some sort of control of the pandemic.

1. All players and officials would have to be tested, for they could not possibly keep “social distance” in the dressing room or on the field.

2. Celtic v Aberdeen semi-final at Hampden on Saturday 1 August. Crowd restricted to 10,000, 5,000 for each set of supporters. No more than 15 people allowed on any supporters’ bus or more than 5 in a minibus. No-one else without a ticket allowed near the ground. Strict “social distancing” to be enforced. Loads of soap available in toilets and antiseptic wipes to be given to fans as they enter.

3. Hearts v Hibs semi-final at Murrayfield (to avoid unnecessary travel) on Sunday 2 August. Similar arrangements.

4. Scottish Cup final at Hampden on Saturday 8 August. Similar arrangements.

5. All games to be shown on terrestial TV, so that other supporters who don’t have tickets can watch the games in their own homes. If pubs have re-opened by that time, strict regulations of no more than 10 people allowed in when game is on TV.

This, is of course, far from ideal, but it would be something. It would, if nothing else, lift morale, and point the right direction for the new, and inevitably truncated season. It is difficult, for example, to image any European or International football for a while, but no reason why, if everyone is sensible, there cannot be some kind of football. OK, impoverished in every sense, but something at least!

I’m missin’ ma fitba! But there can still be some sort of football – as long as everyone is sensible! Do tell me if I am being silly.
