Ange Postecoglou admits Kyogo mistake

Celtic went down 1-0 to their bitter rivals on Sunday lunchtime, with theRangers defeating them at Ibrox in the first Glasgow Derby with fans since the pandemic started. There were no Celtic fans there, of course, but Ange and his men will hope the same will happen at Celtic Park when the sides meet again.

It was a strong Celtic side that walked out on the field today, with all possible key players in the starting XI – however, Kyogo Furuhashi started on the left-wing due to Celtic’s winger crisis; which Ange admitted he got wrong.

Speaking to STV, the Aussie said:

To be honest, I thought I should’ve started him there to begin with.

But with James Forrest out we are short in the wide areas at the moment so I had to start with him out wide on the left.

I knew with his speed getting Kyogo in the middle was going to cause them problems.

With Odsonne Edouard largely ineffective in his show upfront and Adam Montgomery capable of playing down the left flank, there was ample opportunity for Postecoglou to switch matters. But, in fairness, Kyogo did tee up Edouard with a beautifully weighted through ball – although the Frenchman scuffed his chance to put Celtic 1-0 up.

Edouard may have played his last game for Celtic today, which in a sense is a sorry farewell to someone who has been a shining star in Celtic’s ranks for the last five years. However, with the money that is being banded about for Edouard standing at £18.5million, it may be a good thing if it means Kyogo can move back to his striker spot once more.
