‘Away Goals Rules’, referees knowing what’s at stake, Lennox’s ‘goals’ against Liverpool

Celtic defeated Liverpool 55 years ago this evening at Celtic Park, the only goal of that European Cup Winners Cup semi-final coming from Bobby Lennox. Anyone watching the Champions League game last night between PSG and Bayern Munich will have enjoyed the tension as the Bundesliga side looked for a second goal that would have taken them through and the French Champions held on to go through to the semi-finals on the away goals rule.

Bobby Lennox scored in the second leg at Anfield in the second leg back in 1966. His goal came late in the game and would have seen Celtic progress to a European final at Hampden. Liverpool were 2-0 up at the time Lennox scored but the Belgian officials, who later apologised for their error, ruled out the goal for offside.

Another thought on the PSG v Bayern Munich game from last night: Anyone else think that the goal Bayern did scored is exactly the kind of goal that if scored against theRangers this season would inevitably have bene ruled out for an imaginary foul?

Did you see the goal Hibs, who had been denied THREE penalties in their previous two games against the latest Ibrox club, were denied by an outrageous decision? Indeed theRangers players weren’t even claiming a foul for that one as one of their players tripped and fell over after colliding with a teammate.

Decision? Free kick to theRangers. Hibs were also the victims of another ‘Honest Mistake’ when Morelos stamped on an opponent at Easter Road early in the game in which he went on to score the winner. The striker was later given a ban by the SFA.

Here is Jack Ross discussing the latest ‘Honest Mistake’…

Here is the disallowed Hibs goal…clearly the Scottish referees have their own ideas about what the ‘away goal rule’ means at Ibrox this season…

And it’s worth noting again that theRangers have had ZERO domestic red cards and ZERO penalty kicks against them in a season where a referee (Kevin Clancy) stated at the state that they (the referees) all knew what was at stake this season. This, fellow Celtic supporters, is what we are up against on Sunday.

In the meantime, enjoy Bobby Lennox scoring against Liverpool…

Incidentally as of next season the Away Goals rule looks like changing so that there is no away goals advantage if the second leg in a Champions League knock-our round goes to extra-time.
