Back-up goalie Scott Bain signs new three year deal to remain at Celtic

Back-up keeper Scott Bain has signed a new three year contract extension to remain at Celtic until the summer of 2026, as reported by Stephen McGowan at Scottish Daily Mail. The former Dundee goalkeeper, now 31, has been at the club arrived at Celtic in the January 2018 transfer window amid an injury crisis and last played for Celtic in the frustrating goalless draw away to St Mirren just after the League Cup Final win in December 2021.

Bain started out playing at the Aberdeen Youth Academy before signing for Alloa Athletic in 2011, and then he moved to Dundee in 2014. At the start of the January transfer window of 2018, the goalkeeper signed for Hibernian on loan, but an unexpected injury to Craig Gordon saw Bain switch to Celtic three weeks later and he has been at Celtic ever since.

He played in that memorable first ever Beautiful Sunday at Ibrox when Odsonne Edouard grabbed the winner for ten man Celtic to absolutely destroy them and made a point blank save from Alfredo Morelos near to end to deny then a point. There’s a photograph of that incident we’ll try to find, the look of absolute astonishment on Jack Hendry’s face at the Morelos miss/ Bain save is hilarious.

Bain played for Celtic against Valencia in the Europa league, performing well at the Mestalla Stadium and featured much more in his first two seasons at the club than in Ange Postecoglou’s time where Joe Hart has the gloves and Bain in very much an understudy. When Celtic brought in the former Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist last June, it looked like Bain was going to be pushed down the pecking order to the third pick keeper, but the Swiss goalkeeper hasn’t been able to establish himself at Celtic and has suffered a series of niggling injuries throughout the season.

Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Conor Hazard, hero of the Quadruple Treble winning Scottish Cup in December 2020 rounded a twelfth trophy from twelve for the record breaking Hoops, is also back at Celtic after winning the league in Finland while on loan at Helsinki.

With Joe Hart firmly established in the starting eleven and with plenty left in the tank for a fe more seasons, Bain’s new deal effectively as a back-up keeper looks like there will be exits elsewhere in the goalkeeping department, with the focus for the transfer window being for other positions in the team as far as new arrivals are concerned.
