Ben Davies to snub fresh interest from Celtic to remain at Liverpool after Klopp talk

Liverpool fan media were reporting last night that Ben Davies, having spoken to Jurgen Klopp, has no intention of leaving Liverpool in the transfer window and instead will remain to be part of the German manager’s plans for the new season.

With Virgil Van Dijk Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all returning it would seem that the former Preston North End defender, linked once again with a move to Celtic, is going to find it even harder looking for elusive game-time in the Liverpool first team. He never managed a single minute during the second half of last season despite the defensive injury crisis at the club that forced Klopp to take emergency action to nip in and beat Celtic to the signing at the end of the January transfer window.

The 25 year old was close to agreeing a pre-contract deal with Celtic which would have been followed up by an agreement being negotiated with Preston that would have allowed Davies to join Celtic at the end of January. Klopp’s last minute intervention killed that dead in the water but with Celtic short of central defensive options for the new season Davies’ name has been mentioned this week with both the Hoops and Bournemouth being mentioned as possible options for a season long loan.

Liverpool’s preference was reported to be to look to a sale for around £5m but that doesn’t appear to be the case and Davies seems content to remain as a squad player, providing cover and maybe getting some League Cup action under his belt. Time though for Celtic to move on from this one.

And as Celtic seem to be ditching the policy of loaning fringe players in favour of selling, Bayo being the latest example, then surely we should be doing the same with regards bringing loan signings in. These should be restricted to exceptional circumstances and not the rule as was the case increasingly under Peter Lawwell’s guidance.
