Benfica fans seething at Jota’s Celtic deal

A report has made the claim that Benfica supporters are fizzing at the deal that looks like Celtic will bring Jota to the club permanently at the first opportunity. The Portuguese winger joined the club in August and has been a revelation on the left-hand side of our forward area. Trickster, Jota has a clause in the loan deal that took him from the Stadium of Light to Glasgow that includes a £6.5 million purchase option and Celtic look to be actively pursuing this deal.

The heat has come down on Benfica manager Jorge Jesus, after he has failed to make use of the youth system in place at the Portuguese giants. A common theme has developed even from his first stint in charge which has saw multiple talents leave under his watch. Two of whom are now multi-million pound talents in the form of Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo who play for Manchester City.

Jota’s deal that has taken him to Celtic is said to have infuriated the club’s fans as they all held high hopes for the silky winger. The anger is especially palpable now that they have an issue surrounding a lack of depth on the wings the report also mentions. Jesus looks to be leading his team into the knockout stages of the Champions League tonight as it stands, but the Benfica legions are discontented after a humbling defeat by rivals Sporting Lisbon 4-1 recently.

Benfica’s loss will hopefully be Celtic’s gain. The Celtic Star reported earlier today that Ange Postecoglou confirmed the winger would miss several weeks of action due to the hamstring injury picked up against Hearts. It means he will definitely miss the important League Cup Final and possibly the Glasgow Derby on 2 January.

As big a blow as it is, it always gives someone else the opportunity to take the bull by the horns and force their way from the fringes of this team into consistent starting contention. In particular, Mikey Johnston has a golden chance to stake his claim in the Angeball revolution and realise his true potential.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
