The Brentford centre-back has joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan after spending the second half of last term with Celtic.
Benjamin Arthur has joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Brentford, according to West London Sport. The 20-year-old defender heads to Fratton Park in search of regular senior minutes after making three first-team appearances for the Bees.
Arthur spent the second half of last term on loan with Celtic, making six appearances in all competitions. Portsmouth begin their league campaign against QPR on Saturday, while Brentford want the defender to gain a full campaign of competitive football.
Arthur’s spell at Celtic
Arthur joined Celtic on deadline day of the winter transfer window and featured six times as the club secured a league and Scottish FA Cup double. His move to Portsmouth follows that half-season in the Scottish Premiership.
The loan gave Arthur further senior experience after his three appearances for Brentford. He made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup win against Aston Villa, started another Carabao Cup victory against Grimsby Town and later appeared as a substitute in an FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Brentford development continues
According to Brentford’s official announcement, Arthur is a product of Peterborough United’s academy and joined Brentford B in August 2023. He was promoted to Brentford’s first team in July 2025, when he also signed a new long-term contract.
Arthur was named Brentford’s Under-21s Player of the Year after helping the side win the Under-21 Professional Development League and reach the Premier League Cup final. Portsmouth will now provide the next stage of his development on a season-long Championship loan.
