Best saved for last – Celtic’s 22nd goal of the weekend was sensational

There were some memorable goals scored this weekend by the Celtic B Team who put five past Dalbeattie Star without reply on Saturday afternoon and could have been forgiven for thinking they’d end up with the best Celtic result of the weekend from our three teams in action.

However, on what turned out to be a Beautiful Sunday Ange Postecoglou’s exciting Celtic team made history up at Tannadice with a record-breaking away win, with a 9-0 win over Dundee United.  There were three or four real contenders for the club’s goal of the weekend in that sensational Celtic performance. Celtic TV’s Unique Angle production from Tannadice has been viewed by around 29,000 supporters so far and that number is going to rise significantly because what you are watching there is actual history unfolding.

But if you’re busy considering which of both Kyogo’s and Abada’s goals were best and then which was the top one of the nine scored in the game, there’s no point thinking that it will have turned out to be the best goal scored by Celtic over the course of the weekend.

That surely was the 22nd and last Celtic goal of the weekend which was scored by summer signing Lucy Ashworth-Clifford for Fran Alonso’s Celtic FC Women side who maintained their 100% record at the start of this season by putting eight past Motherwell at K-Park in East Kibride in the late Sunday afternoon kick-off.

Alonso’s Ghirls had already done the 9-0 thing with two hat-tricks being scored earlier in the campaign against Hibs on the opening day when both Clarissa Larisey and Jacynta grabbed three goals a piece. On Sunday though that pair both settled for doubles. And it should be noted that Fran Alonso’s coaching staff’s efforts on the training ground paid huge dividends as the team seemed to score pretty much every time they got a corner.

If that can get you four goals in a match then it’s pretty amazing and this is sure to be a prominent feature in this season’s SWPL1 title race, where the three leading sides Celtic, Glasgow City and theRangers are all currently on 12 points from four games played.

So at 7-0 on Sunday, Fran Alonso would have been a happy man but his day was about to get even better when Lucy Ashworth-Clifford emerged from a robust 50-50 challenge near the touchline inside her own half before powering forward and what followed next will have Kyogo, Abada, Rocco Vata, Clarissa Larisey and Jacynta all throwing in the towel, accepting that Lucy had just scored the best of the 22 Celtic goals.

Have a look for yourselves…

And here are all eight Celtic goals from the win over Motherwell on Sunday afternoon.
