Bittersweet night for Celtic star in Belfast

Last night was a disappointing night for Matt O’Riley in terms of the result, but it was a brilliant achievement to force his way into this talented Denmark team and this will be the first of many caps for the Celtic midfielder.

Matt O’Riley made his senior debut for Denmark in Belfast last night. It was a bittersweet night for the Celtic star as the pride of winning his first cap was soured by the bitter  taste of defeat as Michael O’Neill’s men triumphed in a surprise 2-0 victory.

The Danes had already clinched qualification as group winners and gave some youngsters and fringe players such as Matt a chance to shine. Matt without being spectacular, did his chances of further caps no harm at all in his 61 minutes on the pitch. He looked the part in the Danish midfield and this will be the first of many caps for the senior side.

A call up for Matt O’Riley was always on the cards after his wonderful start to the season for Celtic, and it was no more than he deserved. It was great to see him start for Denmark last night and you could see on his face before kick off how chuffed he was.

Matt O’Riley will almost certainly earn many more caps for Denmark, make no mistake about that. Whether he does enough to earn a place in the Danes Euro squad remains to be seen, but if he keeps up his superb form at club level it will be hard for Kasper Hjulmand not to select the Celtic man.
