The newly reinstated Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers, has spoken out about the prospects of Celtic’s star striker, Kyogo, in next season’s campaign.
With 54 goals under his belt for the Hoops since his arrival at the club in July 2021, Kyogo has proved himself to be an extremely valuable part of the Celtic attack. Costing the then manager, Ange Postecoglou £4.6 million, Kyogo played a crucial part in Postecoglou’s Treble success last season, which naturally turned a few heads in Kyogo’s direction.
With Ange Postecoglou’s subsequent departure from Celtic to opt for the Tottenham Hotspur job, it was worried that Ange may attempt to take Celtic players with him as he attempts to rebuild Spurs into a winning side. A mean threat was losing Kyogo to the London club. As it is feared Harry Kane may leave Spurs, links developed between Kyogo and Spurs, which haven’t completely died, but have instead gone quiet.
Following this, the newly re-appointed Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers, has revealed his thoughts on Kyogo for next season, comparing the 28-year-old to Luis Suarez in the process. As reported by the Herald, Brendan said…
“I’ve seen quite a bit of Kyogo. If you look through my history: strikers who can penetrate the last line, who can receive and score goals. Think of [Luis] Suarez – he could run in behind. Danny Graham at Swansea was great for me.”
“Then at Liverpool, [Daniel] Sturridge and Suarez could run in behind and penetrate. It was the same with [Jamie] Vardy at Leicester. Kyogo is certainly that. It’s a team who can look after the ball and play at a fast speed.
“What I see is a team where there are no real big stars. There are some top players — Kyogo, [Reo] Hatate, Jota, these guys — but the star really is the team. It reminds me very much of my Swansea team, how they are really synchronised in how they work and how they play.
“It was a similar sort of idea coming into Swansea [in 2010], they had a decent foundation that we had to build on. I see Celtic as being very similar to that.”
