Brendan Rodgers makes realistic Celtic transfer admission

Brendan Rodgers has moved to temper supporters transfer expectation amidst links to big money signings. The Irishman has a substantial transfer kitty at his disposal but warns that it will take time before a marquee signing can be acquired.

As reported by Record Sport, Rodgers confirmed that he does have a transfer kitty but that there isn’t a rush to spend it as he and his recruitment team assess the current state of play with the squad.

“Yes, there’s money there, but it doesn’t always mean if you spend £9m or £10m you are going to get a top player. There might be someone within your academy or someone at £2m or £3m that can become a £20m or £30m player. My strength is development and I’ve working closely with the people here to improve the squad.”

Rodgers was clear in stating that there is a model at the club and assessing the squad will further inform him as to what he needs to compete on all fronts next season.

“Yeah. The club is in great position. But there is a model here.

“Coming in this second time I’ve very clear of where that is at. It’s what I’m looking forward to. I can bring players in, and you want players who are first team ready. But it’s seeing what the needs of the squad are and then getting the best player possible within that model.”

Rodgers has already added Marco Tilio and Odin Thiago Holm to his side as he looks to strengthen given the losses of Aaron Mooy and Jota. Celtic will be joined by Hyeok-kyu Kwon in Japan as Rodgers’ side take on Yokohama F Marinos and Gamba Osaka. Kwon’s compatriot Hyun-jun Yang is also expected to join up.

Celtic will also not make moves for Jonny Evans, who was linked with a reunion with Rodgers, who he worked with at Leicester City. Another player that will not be swapping the English Premier League for Celtic is Scott McTominay after it was confirmed that Celtic were not interested in pursuing the Scotland Internationalist.
