During yesterday’s draw with Wolves at the Aviva it was notable that the players were trying out a new system as Brendan tweaked the tactics a little with interesting results.
We as supporters and of course the players have been used to Ange and his ‘We Never Stop’ approach the past couple of seasons, a brilliant and refreshing approach to the game and one that this club is built on. Fluid attacking football, and of course it was also a winning formula, the most important thing.
Brendan as we know deploys a different approach, tactically speaking. Not that different from Ange but a bit more of a slower passive game dare I say?
Yesterday Brendan tweaked that system a bit and the side had more of a counter attacking look about it. We flooded the backline and frustrated the opposition before winning the ball back and then attacked at a frenzied pace, and it worked to great effect.
It wasn’t anti football tactics, it was the opposite. It was all about keeping our concentration, harassing the opposition and working hard off the ball, before attacking with fluency and intensity when he had it. It was the best of both worlds.
It was completely different from what we seen under Brendan in his last spell in charge. Could we be about to see a different approach to the Irishman’s game plan?
Possibly, it’s an interesting concept. It won’t be tactics we deploy domestically, apart from maybe Glasgow Derby games, but one that will help us more in Europe. An arena that Brendan was heavily criticised in during his last spell at Celtic. Maybe he’s learned from that and aims to put it right this time out?
Just an Ordinary Bhoy
