Brian Wilson Must Respond as Celtic Fans Collective Issue Boycott Call

Following the scheduled meeting of the Celtic Fans Collective last night, timed to coincide with the transfer business concluding in the January window, a number of decisions were reached…

These included the continuation of the Not Another Penny campaign which was discussed in detail and seems to have been a very effective protest initiative. This could now be expanded with more details of that to be released at a later date.

Following the failure of interim Chairman Brian Wilson to follow up on his call for unity, having ignored requests for meetings with the Celtic Fans Collective after initially agreeing to do so, the supporters’ collective has agreed on further actions and has outlined three requirements to bring these protests to an end.

On an update via social media today the Collective acknowledges that the decisions reached are tough ones for the support but are now necessary in order to bring about change at the club.

“We know boycotts are difficult and deeply emotive for Celtic fans. But if you want positive change at the Club, this action is now necessary,” the Collective stated, adding: “Join us in sending a clear message to Michael Nicholson and the board – your time is up”…

The following statement was posted within the update from the Celtic Fans Collective.

“Following the latest disappointing transfer window, the Celtic Fans Collective met last night to discuss the ongoing campaign for positive change at the football club.

“An overwhelming majority of supporters’ club representatives, fan group representatives, and independent supporters voted in favour of a boycott of Saturday evening’s cup match against Dundee.

“With supporters unjustly banned, fan media locked out, and an executive team widely regarded as unfit for purpose, the clear feeling within the Collective was that the time for action is now. While we recognise the difficult and emotional toll this decision will have on many Celtic supporters, we invite and encourage fans to stand with us in sending a clear and unequivocal message to Celtic FC: you must take decisive action, initiate meaningful change and restore positive communication with supporters.

“The Celtic Fans Collective has agreed on three key areas the club must address to prevent the boycott and further protest action:

  1. The removal of Michael Nicholson as CEO
  2. The reinstatement of the Green Brigade
  3. The lifting of access restrictions on all fan media organisations, allowing them to cover both the men’s and women’s teams once again.

“Following Brian Wilson’s call for unity four weeks ago, the Celtic Fans Collective offered to meet with the Chairman to discuss how this unity could be achieved at the club.

“Unfortunately, that offer was ignored. Despite this, we remain open to further engagement.

“In the meantime, the Celtic Fans Collective will begin the process of planning and coordinating further protest action in the coming weeks.”

It is surely time for the Celtic Board and the Celtic Fans Collective to meet to discuss the way forward. This stand-off will clearly not last forever and at some stage the parties will have to come together to try to get that UNITY Brian Wilson called for.

It’s clear that it is the Celtic Board and not the Celtic Fans Collective who are showing their unwillingness to engage to address the matters at hand and to seek a solution.

The place to start is on the collective punishment indefinite ban on the supporters situated at the front of the North Curve. On my supporters bus we have an older supporter in his late sixties who is affected by this ban and accordingly has not been to a game this year.

He has refused offers of spare tickets on the bus as he stands in solidarity with the other supporters who have not been involved in any of the incidents that the club highlighted earlier in the season. Those responsible have been dealt with by the courts so why hundreds of other Celtic supporters are involved is baffling and also unacceptable.

Many Celtic supporters, especially those on the HCTS will have had the money for this weekend’s Scottish Cup tie against Dundee taken out of their banks and will feel that the club will have the money so won’t care if we are there or not.

But what would be the alternative? The season ticket money was banked nine months ago so the same thing would apply to any league match. And the team will need maximum support against Stuttgart in the Europa League – all the better if the Green Brigade are back for that one surely?

The fan media ban isn’t such a critical matter but it is worth noting that we did nothing at all wrong and have zero to apologise for. Celtic simply shut it down to stop any questions coming their way. Censorship, it’s as grubby as that.

Michael Nicholson’s position at the club surely must be in doubt but he could hang on IF he shows some leadership, which to date has been conspicuous by its absence. Better late than never Michael, or before it’s too late for you.

It’s probably the Board that will remove Michael Nicholson from his post not the support, with Dermot Desmond making the call. Damage is being done to Celtic so why not stop that right now by reaching out to the Collective and getting agreements in place? Celtic First. Celtic Last. Celtic Overall.

Get the Green Brigade to agree to a code of conduct through the Collective, so if they break it they are not only answerable to the Board but also to the wider Celtic support.

Set out terms of engagement with the fan media on obligations on both sides. Remember it was Celtic, not fan media who breached the previous agreement.

Agree a structure for moving forward working with the support and not being at loggerheads with the very people who make Celtic what it is.

No-one wants this to escalate any further. Last night Hearts lost meaning the League title is back in our own hands. You have already shot us in the foot Michael by your ludicrous decisions on Wilfried Nancy. It cost us a cup final and a dozen points. Get around the table THIS WEEK and look at building bridges with your paying customers, the Celtic support.

As things stand history will certainly not be kind to this Celtic Board.

  1. Questions about the Green Brigade’s future attendance at Celtic Park should be separated from the other issues, which are more important. Also: requiring the Green Brigade to enter into an agreement with the club is a strategy that has failed previously and has led to run-ins with the football authorities. I have never believed that the Green Brigade is fully committed to supporting the team; it has its own agenda, and it has consistently behaved recklessly and with no regard for the safety of others: I stopped going to away matches as I found myself constantly nearby its members, who were brandishing flares. Let’s learn to sing again without them!

    • The Green Brigade are an integral member of the Celtic Fan Collective, which represents the vast majority of supporters, especially the match going ones.

Those that don’t want a united fanbase are simply following the board media line, who’s attitude is summed up in the following lyric:

“They prefer sheep to thinking men but men who think like sheep are even better”.

If a code of conduct is required, then it’s for executives, charged with running the club, who’s actions and inactions have cost the club tens, if not hundreds of millions.

This has led to regular embarrassment in Europe and crushes any ambition that fans, managers and players have.

  2. The boycotts and protests during games are self serving and embarrassing. I want Celtic to win the league, the Cup and to do well in Europa this season.
Do I want the GB reinstated? Well I can live without the pyro, the politics and the repeated breaches of previous promises. I want fans who support the team in the ground. The truth is they don’t command the support that they imagine – read the fan survey if you don’t believe that.
Nicolson is an employee. If he left tomorrow he’d be replaced by someone similar. There are other ways to make points about the ownership and leadership of the club. We might even have discussed them at the AGM…oh wait, that was shouted down too. What a victory for everyone that was …

  3. At present I believe that the actions of the collective, have become to personal, for proper engagement to happen properly imo?

Can understand that this board seems to take preference over the running of the PLC, than the footballing department, despite not being in favour of the likes whatsoever? To much greed involved for my liking.

But also believe that actions against the PLC, will do more harm to the footballing department, than the PLC more so imo?

Wouldn’t be in favour for any boycott actions whatsoever. Only think it’s a disrespectful action against the decision making of MoN and Maloney for there decision making during the January window?
And hardly a good look for all our new additions, who we are still hoping to bring success to ourselves this season?
Don’t believe that such boycott actions would make such players feel welcome at our club imo?

Wouldn’t be something I would associate with our support, but can’t help thinking, that it’s a potential look that is growing imo?

Hopefully differences can get resolved, but won’t without communication getting formed.

Personally believe that the ongoing civil war within our club, does nothing more than to benefit all of our rivals. And haven’t we always had them within Scottish football, by helping to aid the likes also imo?
