‘He brings a great intelligence, pace and touch,’ Rodgers praises Celtic star

BRENDAN RODGERS last night looked back with considerable satisfaction on how his decision to pair Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard together as a strike force went at McDiarmid Park.

True, there was only the one goal to show for it but it was enough and there was also enough promise to suggest that this is the way forward. The Celtic Star broke the news yesterday afternoon that both strikers would play and the result was a place in the semi-final against Hearts and a much improved performance from the horror show at Rugby Park.

Incidentally we complained about the plastic pitch before the game on Sunday but it’s hard to blame that after defeat. Win or lose on that pitch – you never see a decent game and it is worth considering lowering our numbers at these plastic park grounds to help force change.

Back to Brendan talking to BT Sport post match about playing both his strikers last night.

“Leigh could have had a hat-trick, but what is important is that he is smelling the goals again.

“He is making the right moves. He had a couple of great opportunities getting into good positions and credit to their keeper as he made a couple of great blocks.

“Leigh is always going to be alive in the box for chances coming and it was a great finish,” Brendan said.

“Odsonne is a very clever footballer, so him playing off the side is something he has done a number of times for us.

“He’s probably not the out-and-out goalscorer Leigh is, but he brings a great intelligence, pace and touch, I thought he did very well.

“Leigh is our box player up there. If we are playing in a game where we really need to stretch the team with speed that’s something I need to think about Odsonne playing more central and maybe Leigh in a different position.

“But I thought as the game wore on we started to look more like ourselves. What was important for me was the creativity.

“We created chances and on another day with a little more confidence we will probably score three or four goals.”
