Callum McGregor can replace Scott Brown, says Charlie Mulgrew

Callum McGregor can replace Scott Brown as Celtic captain, says former club defender Charlie Mulgrew. Brown will leave Celtic after fourteen seasons this summer, with an incredible trophy haul of 22. The heir apparent is Callum McGregor, who has deputised under Brown since both Mikael Lustig and Kieran Tierney departed the club. Speaking to Sky Sports, Mulgrew says that McGregor has what it takes to be a Celtic captain.

“Callum McGregor is a stand out candidate if you are looking at the Celtic squad at the moment.

“I have played with Callum with Scotland and at Celtic. He is definitely the person you would imagine would step in as captain.

“The most important thing is he doesn’t try to copy Scott Brown and he does it his own way.

“If he is chosen to be captain it is because of how he has been acting, not the way he is supposed to act.

“He is not supposed to act like Scott Brown, he is supposed to be himself.

“I am sure Callum McGregor would be a great candidate, someone who would do it well and I am sure he would do it his own way and lead by example.”

McGregor has been one of Celtic’s most consistent performers since breaking through under Ronny Deila. The player will likely be looking to find his best form and help Celtic regain all of Scotland’s footballing silverware next season but as a captain in his own right.

McGregor has made 323 appearances for Celtic, scoring 53 and assisting 63 at the age of just 27. He will be looking to find his best form but only after he takes a well-earned rest as he continues to play 50+ games a season. The club need to hire wisely in the summer both in the dugout, in the manager’s backroom staff and crucially on the pitch. Brendan Rodgers help cultivate McGregor into one of Scotland’s best players, hopefully Eddie Howe can help take McGregor onto the next level as he looks to make himself an established Celtic captain.
