Calum Butcher charged after shocking Turnbull challenge

Calum Butcher has been charged by the SFA after a shocking challenge in Celtic’s win over Dundee United on Sunday. Turnbull was on the end of a second half lunge from the English midfielder but survived, despite the potential leg breaker. Now, he faces a ban from the SFA after he was cited for a fast track disciplinary.

Dundee United’s hardman Butcher was on the bench for Dundee United on Sunday having just returned from his ban after getting a red card against Aberdeen. The Englishman was only on the park a few minutes when his sliding tackle on Turnbull with both feet off the ground caught the Celtic midfielder’s shin. High, wild, reckless and dangerous. Don Robertson flashed the yellow but now it appears that he could have this upgraded.

Butcher will appear in front of a fast-track hearing on December 9 as a panel of three former referees debate whether or not the tackle requires to be upgraded to a red. Celtic players need to be protected against challenges of this nature and to avoid lengthy spells on the sidelines.
