Cause for Concern – This is not a decision Tom Rogic would have taken lightly

The news Tom Rogic was leaving Celtic after nine trophy laden years in the Hoops came as something of a surprise to Celtic supporters, and to say the midfield maestro’s exit was emotional wouldn’t do it justice – after all when it came to big games, we all knew Tom Rogic could step and deliver.

Now Australian football fans are also in a state of shock, as Rogic has pulled out of the Socceroo’s squad for their crunch World Cup qualifying play-off match with UAE tomorrow, with the FA’s social media account stating:

“Tom Rogic has withdrawn from the Socceroos’ squad for June 2022, citing personal reasons. We wish Tom well as we continue to focus on the task ahead in Doha.”

So far Graham Arnold, Australia’s national team boss has decided not to call up a replacement for Rogic stating:

“My focus must now be on the players we have here in Qatar. We have selected an extended squad of quality players and I believe that we will achieve something special for Australia over the next two weeks.”

The loss of Rogic will no doubt have left Australian fans reeling, after all Rogic is a stand-out performer for Australia and his experience and ability to open up defences will be sorely missed – particularly in a game of such vital importance to Australia’s hopes for qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

Yet Tom Rogic stating his withdrawal is for ‘personal reasons’ rather than any injury would be cause for concern.

Hopefully the matter is nothing too serious and Rogic can get back to playing soon. After all, for a player who has travelled thousands of air miles to play for his national team over the nine years of playing for Celtic, there is little chance Tom Rogic pulled out of such an important tie unless he had little other choice.

Whatever those reasons may be, we wish Tom Rogic all the best, because this decision to withdraw from international duty so late in the day is unlikely to be something the player would have taken lightly.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
