Celtic 3-1 Aberdeen – Nancy survives, but misfiring strikers so nearly cost him dearly

Hooray, Celtic finally won a game a football after beating Aberdeen 3-1 in one of the most fascinating and one-sided games I’ve seen in a long while…

Much like Tannadice in midweek we started on the front foot and should have been a few goals ahead by the interval, with only a combination of excellent goalkeeping and terrible finishing the difference between the visitors being on the end of a serious thumping.

Johnny Kenny was the culprit yet again as he spurned his usual gilt edge chances. Indeed had the Irishman converted all the opportunities that fell his way in the last two games, he would be sitting clear at the top of the Premiership goal scoring charts!

Benjamin Nygren scored that all illusive and much deserved opening goal, and then just before the interval the Dons were correctly reduced to ten men after Lobban denied Diazen Maeda a clear goalscoring opportunity. Why it took VAR over 60 seconds to reevaluate the on field decision, is anyone’s guess as it was one of the most blatant red you’ll ever see.

Incredibly BBC Sportscene last night analysed the incident to death desperately trying to put forward a case for the clearcut decision to be wrong before grudging accepting it was the correct call.

The second half saw the Hoops lay siege on the Dons goal in search of a second that would put the game to bed, but once again found Dimitar Mitov in superb form, whilst the woodwork took its fair share of battering as Celtic looked to clinch all three points.

Then you guessed it, the ten man Dons equalised with just under a quarter of the game to play, after catching out a yet again static Celtic defence against the run of play to silence the home crowd. It was totally undeserved, but that’s football.

Liam Scales assumed Daizen Maeda was breaking forward after he won possession in the centre of the park, But Daizen let his footing with Scales already setting off on a sprit up the wing leaving a huge gap for a simple through all.

Kasper Schmeichel, with nothing to do all afternoon, should perhaps have done better with a stronger touch to turn the shot away for a corner but instead he merely diverted it into the Celtic net. Quite unbelievably Aberdeen were level.

However the Celtic players to their credit never put their heads down, and backed by a mostly supportive home crowd they went in search of the winner.

Kieran Tierney did just that with a minute of normal time remaining as he nodded in from close range sending the home crowd into a frenzy. It was a fine cross from substitute Colby Donovan and the goal was no more than Celtic’s performance merited.

Minutes later James Forrest tapped in a third after fine work from Callum McGregor in getting to the byeline to set up the veteran winger for his first goal of the season and to make sure that he made it ti 17 successive goalscoring seasons wearing the Hoops. It was great to hear the support recognise this with a rendition of ‘Jamesy, Jamesy Forrest on the wing, on the wing…”

So a valuable three points, and a first win and corner turned for Wilfried Nancy, but only just as our misfiring strikers almost cost him dearly. Sort it out in the January window please Wilfried and we’ll not forget that the board sold Kyogo last January and a year later we are still calling in a replacement.

Just an Ordinary Bhoy

Some morons claiming they want us to get beat from now on so Wilf gets the sack. I can’t help thinking if he was a white Irishman would there be the same vitriol? Doubt it. Definitely an extra level of bitterness and intolerance. The whole saga is shining a light on an element of Celtic support who don’t have two brain cells to rub together and are as bad for the club as the board. Whining Buckfast addled cnuts need to fucking button it and back this guy until he shows us what he can do.
