Celtic at Ibrox: “We can’t let it become a shambles,” Sutton’s VAR Warning

Celtic legend, Chris Sutton, has expressed his concern on the possible problems that may occur over VAR in Monday’s Glasgow Derby.

Firstly, Sutton says that the clash at Ibrox will be a ‘great occasion’, but is concerned that the reffing team may allow the game to fall into a ‘farce’. The Celtic legend insists that the referee, John Beaton, and the VAR official, Willie Collum, must be strong with their decisions and use VAR only when absolutely necessary.

It’s no secret that Sutton hasn’t exactly been impressed with VAR in Scotland, since its introduction in November, but with this being the first time Celtic and theRangers will face off with the technology in play, Sutton insists that we can’t let VAR ruin the game as it is the ‘showcase fixture’ of Scottish football.

Willie Collum is on VAR duties on Monday

Sutton has been left utterly unimpressed by a few previous VAR decisions since the introduction of VAR into Scottish football, which has led to his plea to the referees to use the system as little as possible and instead make strong decisions on the field.

Speaking to the DailyRecord, Sutton said: “Ibrox should be a great occasion. I just worry about what is going to happen and whether the game is going to descend into a farce.”

“John Beaton has to be strong and must make the right calls. And Willie Collum in the VAR bunker should only get involved if it’s absolutely necessary. The Old Firm is a showcase fixture. We can’t let it become a shambles.”
