Celtic chasing impressive Kenyan central defender but face competition

Celtic are chasing Elfsborg’s Joseph Okumu. The 24-year-old Kenyan Internationalist has just one year remaining on his contract with the Swedish side and they may be forced to recoup some value in him by selling him in the transfer window. Swedish outlet Aftonbladet claim that Celtic, Rangers, Reims, Lorient and Genk are all interested in the player with Lorient tabling a £2.5m bid.

Celtic will need to act quickly and avoid missing out on another target. For £3m, a player that has played 62 games and scored twice during a career that has taken him from Kenya to Sweden via the United States. The central defence position has been one that the club have struggled in for the last year (at least) with Jullien and Ajer providing the best partnership. Injuries broke this partnership up and the replacements (Duffy, Bitton and Welsh) haven’t been up to standard.

Elsewhere, Jack Hendry is being pursued by Oostende with the Belgians keen on exercising the option to buy. Celtic need to get the managerial situation sorted so that they can pitch an alternative to guys like Hendry, who showed himself last night to be a competent player.

It was reassuring to see Christopher Jullien appear in front of the media during the away kit launch. The Frenchman was a big miss over the course of last season and will (hopefully) be an integral part of a rebuild.
