Celtic confirm Griffiths loan move to Dundee

Celtic this afternoon confirmed that Leigh Griffiths has joined Dundee on a season long loan deal, thus effectively ending the striker’s time as a Celtic player.

The striker was given a one year extension after the arrival of Ange Postecoglou but has failed to play any competitive football under the new manager, having been sent home from the summer training camp in Wales amid the latest scandal that has tarnished his reputation among the Celtic support.

Griffiths did come off the bench in a pre-season friendly at Celtic Park in front of a reduced capacity crowd and was widely booed by a significant proportion of the supporters in attendance.

The player was a significant goalscorer for Celtic, especially during Ronny Deila’s last season in charge when he scored 40 goals. That form has never quite returned, with injuries and various off the field issues combining to restrict his appearances and indeed his goalscoring.

During a period of personal health issues Celtic were brilliant in dealing with and assisting the player.

Griffiths can maybe do Celtic a turn by helping Dundee get some points off theRangers, he will of course by unable to play against Celtic this season.

His striking partnership with Odsonne Edouard looked for a while like it was going to turn into something special but on the day that the French talisman is set to sign for Crystal Palace, Leigh Griffiths’ time in the Hoops has also ended and we wish him all the best at Dundee.

The Dens Park club have meanwhile welcomed their new loan signing from Celtic.

Dundee Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Leigh Griffiths on a season long loan from Celtic.

Leigh is well known to the Dundee support having previously spent 18 months with the club and was a key member of the Dee-Fiant squad that overcame a 25 point penalty to avoid relegation in 2010/11.

Previous to joining Dundee, he played alongside Manager James McPake at Livingston and after a spell with Wolves when he left Dens he joined up again with James at Hibernian.

In 2014, he moved to Celtic where we went on to score over 100 goals for the club and win various honours including seven league titles and individual recognition as PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year and Scottish Football Writers Footballer of the Year.

He has been capped 22 times for Scotland and scored four times, including a memorable double over England at Hampden.

Leigh re-joins the club today on a season long loan.
