Celtic confirm return of Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney as management search begins

Celtic have appointed Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney as the interim management team after Brendan Rodgers’ shock exit. The Irishman tendered his resignation on Monday in the wake of the defeat against Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, which left Celtic eight points behind the Jambos after nine games.

Celtic have confirmed that the recruitment process for a new permanent manager is underway but that the first team will be looked after by O’Neill and former Hibs and Wigan manager Shaun Maloney.

Celtic face Falkirk at Celtic Park on Wednesday before facing Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup Semi Final at Hampden on Sunday. The two games are imperative towards Celtic’s season and the timing of the decision has raised some eyebrows that Rodgers was perhaps given a decision to make whether he wanted to jump or be pushed.

O’Neill last managed Celtic twenty years ago, overseeing a period of success before leaving in 2005. MON last managed in 2019 with a short spell at Nottingham Forest. There is another manager that did not fare particularly well with Evangelos Marinakis who is available, Ange Postecoglou. The Australian left Celtic two years ago and was replaced with Rodgers but since then he has won the Europa League, left Spurs and been sacked by Forest.

Ange will be one of the frontrunners for the job along with Bodo-Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen and Marco Rose. There is still a lot to be won this season and the club have to act swiftly to ensure that they have the right man in the building to get the team back to winning ways.

  1. A lot of people will be happy.
    Adh mor Brendan.
Obviously a lot going on the supporters were not aware of.
    11 trophies and forced out.
    Let’s see what happens.

  2. Not interested in blame game. Club comes first and needs sorted …big time…The whole situation , on and off the field, bordered on toxic…and it has to change.. Hopefully others will reflect on their part in all this…and do the decent thing…Won’t hold my breath ‘ though.

  3. Believe every word of the statement, thought Brendan was up to something all season. I genuinely think he bought players in the summer to use as pawns in his game, and would have got better players if he asked for them. Reports he was dismissing lists of scouted players, are you telling me there wasn’t a decent striker or right winger Brendan could have got in the Summer? They backed him the year before and we did well in the Champions league, what reason was there not to back him?
The midfield trio of CalMac, Reo and Engles won a double and pushed Bayern all the way, didn’t play together once before Graz, Murray and Donovan over Trusty and Ralston, makes no sense, not both young, inexperienced guys replacing an entire side of the defense. Touneckti plays ring wing for his country but we put Nygren, who a blind man could see can’t play right wing, in instead? How will Brendan look if Trusty and or Simpson-Pusey come in and play well, or Touneckti goes to right wing and plays well.
We’ll spend big in January, either way, true statement or false, in strengthens either argument against Brendan. I think we’ll really kick on but even if we stay in touch and scrape through to the Europa play offs, we can still win the league and go far in Europe with some good investment in January

  4. Not to surprised at Rodgers leaving our club.
Bit surprised by the timing of it, with the week that’s in it.
Certainly didn’t expect the damaging statement from DD, which only potentially increases the level of toxicity within our club imo?

Regardless, certainly didn’t expect MoN and maloney to be given the task of trying to turn our fortunes around.
Wouldn’t like to predict how this is going to work out for ourselves?
A potential return to MoN favoured 442 may well be in the offering.
Hopefully our players will buy into the changes that will be enforced upon them now, especially as I still suspect that way to many of them weren’t relating to Rodgers imo.

As a supporter, that requires supporting decisions taken, that aren’t to my own particular liking.
Could be in for a few more testing weeks ahead all the same.

  5. you cant trust DDs statement. There is a blatant lie in it which makes everything else in it very questionable indeed. he said “to ensure Celtic’s continued success domestically and to achieve further progress in Europe. Every pound generated by the club is reinvested towards those goals” We know that to be not true
