Celtic confirm that Joe Hart will wear the No. 1 jersey

Celtic today confirmed the obvious but it was welcome news nevertheless and well derived for the player in question. Joe Hart will now officially be the Celtic Number 1 and as such will change his squad number from 15 to 1.

This news of course comes about just after Vasilis Barkas moved on a season loan to Belgian side Utrecht and ahead of the anticipated arrival of Bejamin Seigrist, a free agent after his stint at Dundee United came to an end.

The Swiss keeper though will be well aware that he will be the second choice keeper at best with Scott Bain likely to drop down the pecking order. Barkas, if he returns next season is highly unlikely – to say the least – to ever play for Celtic again. The best we can hope for is he re-establishes his reputation as a top class keeper earned at AEK Athens – presumably that was the case as Celtic shelled out £4.5m for his services. An eye for a player and all that, Peter! Then Celtic can offload him for some kind of fee.

Bain is another one who doesn’t really cut it as being good enough to play for Celtic, although not as disastrous as the sorry Greek shotmisser. Seigrist looks like being a sound addition and should be an adequate stand-in if and when Joe Hart in unavailable.

The two most important positions at a club are perhaps the manager and his goalkeeper. In Ange Postecoglou and Joe Hart Celtic have those key areas covered brilliantly.

Celtic confirmed the news today saying: “He’s our number 1. We can confirm today that Joe Hart will be wearing the No. 1 jersey for the coming season.

Joe, who last season wore the No.15 and had a fantastic season for Celtic will wear the new number, with Vasilis Barkas moving on loan to Utrecht.”
