Celtic confirm touching gesture to Bertie Auld for League Cup semi-final

Celtic have confirmed that the first team players will all wear No.10 on their shorts during Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. The Celtic family were rocked by the loss of Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld at the weekend and now the club will mark the passing of a club legend by wearing Auld’s number on the shorts at the weekend.

Celtic wore No.5 and No.9 in honour of Billy McNeill and Stevie Chalmers during the Treble Treble Cup Final win over Hearts back in 2019. It is nice to see the club continuing this, even if it is in extremely sad circumstances. Bertie was loved by all associated with the club as he was a great ambassador for the club as he was the life and soul of the party as well as being a great man.

Bertie was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2009, celebrating all of his achievements including five League titles, three Scottish Cups, four League Cups and two Glasgow Cups. He was a part of the side that triumphed in Lisbon on the 25th of May 1967, breaking into The Celtic Song in the tunnel before the match.

It has been 52 years since Celtic faced St Johnstone in the 1969 League Cup Final in which the Celts ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Bertie.
