Celtic could miss out on central defender for just £3.4m

Celtic look like they may miss out on Elfsborg central defender Joseph Okumu with Belgian outfit Gent keen on securing his signature this summer. The 24-year-old Kenyan Internationalist has just one year remaining on his contract with the Swedish side are looking to offload him in this transfer window. Celtic were a number of teams linked with the player, as per Swedish outlet Aftonbladet.

Now, Goal claims that Gent are close to sealing a £3.4m deal to sign the defender weeks after Celtic were linked with a move. The player looks set to travel to Belgium in order to discuss terms but Elfsborg will only sell if their fee demands are met.

Celtic will need to act quickly and avoid missing out on another target. For £3m, a player that has played 62 games and scored twice during a career that has taken him from Kenya to Sweden via the United States. The central defence position has been one that the club have struggled in for the last year (at least) with Jullien and Ajer providing the best partnership. Injuries broke this partnership up and the replacements (Duffy, Bitton and Welsh) haven’t been up to standard.

Ange Postecoglou will know that the club need to sign a couple of central defenders at least. Last week, the club were linked with a move for Erik Sviatchenko, who left the club back in 2018. Kris Ajer is expected to leave for a fee just below £20m and that needs to be reinvested into signing high quality, aggressive defenders that will be able to improve themselves but raise the standard in the Celtic defence.
