Can we talk about Sunday 5 December? Celtic are away to Dundee United that day with the kick-off at Tannadice being 12 noon, so the action will be over around 1.50pm. Hopefully we’ll all have a smile on our face after a Celtic victory.
Just over two hours after the final whistle goes at Tannadice, Fran Alonso will lead his Celtic FC Women side out at Firhill for the 2021 SWPL Cup Final against Glasgow City.
To win the cup Celtic will have to do it the hard way, after comfortably qualifying from the group stages over the summer, Celtic were given one of the toughest possible draws in the quarter finals – an away tie against theRangers. That though was negotiated successfully thanks to the only goal of the game from Charlie Wellings and that set up a semi-final showdown with current cup holders Hibs.
Hibs have won the cup for the last four occasions it has been played (it had a covid suspension) and were looking determined to keep their firm grasp on the silverware at yesterday’s semi-final at Forthbank in Stirling. And inside a quarter of an hour Boyle scored a superb goal for the holders to give Celtic a significant hurdle to negotiate if they were going to reach the final.
Hibs are a very decent side and they went in at the internal 1-0 up having just about shaded the first half. They had done a great job in keeping Celtic’s main goal threat Charlie Wellings quiet and it was a confident looking Hibs side which emerged for the second half only were then kept waiting for several minutes the re-emergence of Celtic, with Fran Alonso looking to his bench with Bowie and Shen replacing Donaldson and Larisey.
And almost straight away Celtic were level when a effort from just outside the area by Jacynta – who is really finding her feet as a Celtic player – found the corner of the Hibs net. Maybe their keeper could have done better but around 400 Celtic supporters didn’t care much about that.
Celtic were on top in the second half as they chased down a winner and on 79 minutes Charlie Wellings got her first sniff of goal and inevitably the ball ended up in the back of the net. Celtic could have added to that but 2-1 was more than enough to see the team progress to their first Cup Final – at Firhill on Sunday 5 December where the opposition will be SWPL Champions Glasgow City (who beat Spartans 3-0 in the other semi final played yesterday).
So to win the cup Celtic will have to do it the hard way, beating all three of the other top sides in the Scottish game, theRangers (current league leaders), Hibs (current cup holders) and then Glasgow City (current champions).
So with maybe 4-5000 Celtic Fans in the away support being up at Tannadice for the game, the rest of us will be watching on television. But why not after watching the Dundee Utd v Celtic game on TV, head along to Firhill and support Celtic in a cup final and hopefully see Fran Alonso’s side bring the first piece of silverware of the season back to Paradise.
