Celtic Fans Collective Dens Park Protest Divides Celtic Support

The Celtic Fans Collective released an update last night following on from the protest that took place ahead of the game at Dens Park on Sunday…

For the record , this protest was NOT discussed at the meeting last Thursday night as the main focus was on the ‘Not a Penny More’ campaign, which was to begin on Friday morning to coincide with the latest adidas launch from the club.

There was a brief mention of some protest happening at Dundee as a side remark but certainly nothing else and there was no mention of disrupting the kick-off, annoying the Celtic players most notably Kasper Schmeichel or in the second half allowing the Dundee keeper to reduce the playing time by through reside objects into his penalty box then being allowed to clear the debris by the referee.

This was very much a Celtic ultras production, we have seen it play out previously across the road at Tannadice in very different circumstances to Sunday. Our concern is not that it happened on Sunday but that those responsible felt that they had the green light to proceed without any agreement from the 400 odd supporters organisations who have signed to petition shortly after the transfer window at the start of last month.

Propose it, have a vote and if you are successful you have a mandate. If the big Celtic supporter associations withdraw their support the objectives of the entire initiative will suffer and there are clear signs that this may happen if there are further disruptive protests that have not been agreed collectively.

Here’s what the latest message from The Celtic Fans Collective said last night, and unlike the Green Brigade and the North Curve (both represented on the committee, while most supporters would struggle to understand that they are not actually one and the same) the comments to their social media post are left open so we’ll have a look at that after you read this…

‘At yesterday’s match, the Celtic Fans Collective conducted its latest protest action as part of the ongoing campaign against the Celtic board.

‘On the kick-off whistle, Celtic fans threw a mixture of balls and tangerines onto the park. This caused a short hold-up to the game where Celtic board members were once again exposed live on TV as thousands of supporters loudly and clearly sent a message that the current board is unfit for purpose.

‘Unfortunately, the team’s performance was symptomatic of the current state of the club and what fans watched was a direct consequence of the failed strategy of the board. Yesterday’s result underlined the urgent need for change in the boardroom with a looming January transfer window which will be critical to the success of this season. It is self-evident that we cannot approach January with the same complacency and arrogance that we have seen in recent windows and that a change in approach is required.

‘Through the ‘Not Another Penny’ boycott initiative and further actions, the Celtic Fans Collective will continue to coordinate activity to force positive change and hold the Celtic board to account.’

Did the protest impact on the players in the 2-0 defeat to Dundee and would we be writing about this today had Celtic won the match? Well, the protest didn’t help the players and you could see that some were annoyed.

I remember once at Hamilton standing at the side of the tunnel right next to Scott Brown as he was waiting for the green light to take the Celtic team on the pitch ahead of kick-off. The focus on his face was intense as he stood there for a minute or so. The players were disrupted at their work on Sunday by the protest, although I accept the manager’s point that it’s certainly not an excuse for the players that they lost the game.

The main issue is this progressing without the agreement of the supporter groups who make up The Celtic Fans Collective and the point in raising this after the dust has settled on the weekend is to ensure that the Collective endures as it to needs unity and collective agreement if it is going to become what we hope that it will in being the collective voice of the Celtic support as we look to create a better version of Celtic.

The comments below the Collective’s post on X last night shows a majority against the protest and that’s important to take on board as the Celtic Fans Collective moves forward. On Sunday there were enough banners to keep the protest ticking along without the need for the unapproved action that happened.

Some of the Comments to Celtic Fans Collective’s post

“Why don’t you issue another poll or a questionnaire seeking feedback on your antics so far and their perceived effectiveness? Highly unlikely – you wouldn’t like the answers! Is this part of your negotiations to enlarge the standing areas at Celtic Park? Short-sighted, small-minded, a self-serving publicity stunt. I hope Baldric, gets his act together when planning the next stunt.”

“Never for one minute thought the whole Collective agreed to this, what an embarrassment, seems the Board isn’t the only thing not fit for purpose!”

“Pathetic and counterproductive. Back the team in the stadiums. Nothing should be done that affects the players negatively. Even our players were shaking their heads at that protest. Do what you want outside them after a game.”

“Losing support if you were part of that yesterday. I 100% back the objectives but that was the final straw. Didnt agree with silent protests and not backing the team at Killie but stood outside in solidarity. That yesterday was it for me and many others in the same boat.”

“One stupid pointless effort yesterday, on and off the park. The collective did not agree to this nor did the majority of supporters groups (in the collective) who had no say ? Losing credibility with yesterday’s actions…”

“Don’t agree with this at all. Disruption of games doesn’t help the team in any way. Boycott merch yes but the whole campaign was back the team. You could see how annoyed Kasper was. Enough is enough.”

“You are losing support of fans, yesterday’s stunt was pathetic, how does forcing the players to clear the pitch, disturbing their preparation for the game, falls under back the team, I don’t understand.”

“Did the whole collective agree to this? The team are struggling enough as it is. Nothing to disrupt the team on the pitch.”

“Good effort yesterday. The Celtic board will be hoping your actions will divide support. Evidence of that is already starting to show. Just know you are the only ones currently trying to bring about the change that the Celtic support want. Keep fighting the good fight.”

“From highlighting a problem, to becoming part of it! Clearly affected the team and quite honestly did more to make the support look foolish than draw attention to the board. Is this really the best we can come up with?”

“Had Celtic won the support for the collective would have continued to grow, however as you can see with the replies so far, this 2 minutes disruption was enough for some to blame the collective for the result. still ignoring the overall goal to make Celtic the best it can be.”

“We want to boycott sales of items beyond match tickets because it’s important to back the team and ensure they aren’t distracted by the campaign we are engaged in… so we will throw hundreds of items onto the pitch to disrupt the team who are trying to play.” Slow. Hand. Clap.”

“The disruption before kick-off needs reviewed. This isn’t helping the team. I totally agree with you against the board we need change, this should be happening in the concourse on the Celtic way leaving the team to focus on the park.”

“This not a protest in anyway shape of form it’s a distraction and a disturbance to the team. It’s not acceptable just because you want media coverage there other ways then thrown balls at players or on a pitch. It’s causing a divide within the Celtic supporters as well.”

“I mind you complaining that the board statement didn’t have a name to it. So whose name is going on this announcement? What parts of the collective support it and who don’t? Surely you should be transparent?”

“Any chance you can stop this disruption of the team when they need us most and get to the front door to protest against the board.”
