Celtic FC Statement: An apology and a more appropriate response from the club

CELTIC have acted to repair the damage done last night though the club’s initial statement relating to the major crushing incident that occurred in the passageway behind the North Stand shortly before the kick-off yesterday.

Celtic have offered the club’s apologies, have commitment themselves to a full review with Police Scotland and will presumably take action to ensure that this kind of incident is never repeated at Celtic Park.

I’d rather they go further and say that the reduced allocation is not for us at these games and offer two options – one a complete ban of away fans or two, restore sanity and go back to the tried and tested, safe arrangements that have worked well in the modern era of these Celtic v Rangers and Rangers v Celtic games.

We are getting stuck with this lower allocation nonsense simply because their fans want it. Let’s take it off the table, please.

I don’t know any Celtic supporter who is planning on going to Ibrox, of course we will fill that corner but do we really need the hassle? Let’s tell them we don’t want the tickets.

The Celtic Star reported on this crush straight away yesterday – see HERE and gave a more detailed consideration to the issues surrounding it HERE.

Here’s the latest Celtic statement, replacing the ill-considered one from last night.

CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB STATEMENT

“CELTIC Football Club today issued the following statement with regards to events prior to Sunday’s match at Celtic Park.

“The safety of our fans will always be of paramount importance and this is a matter which we are treating with the utmost seriousness. The Club, along with Police Scotland, will be investigating this matter fully to identify the causes and take the appropriate steps to ensure this does not happen again at Celtic Park.

“The Club and Police Scotland will advise of the outcome of this investigation once it is complete.

“We are fully aware of the serious difficulties which arose yesterday for supporters, and we sincerely regret and apologise that so many fans were faced with this situation.

“Yesterday’s match was the first occasion which featured new segregation and access arrangements.

“Our total focus now is to work with the Police in looking at these arrangements and other circumstances surrounding this particular fixture and to take the correct action to ensure this situation is never repeated.

“Our priority will always be to ensure our supporters enjoy a safe and positive experience at Celtic Park. We will be doing all we can to make sure this continues to be the case at all times.”
