Celtic interview leak suggests Leeds more likely destination for Daniel Farke

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, who specialises in transfer updates and has just over 164k followers on twitter, this afternoon broke some exclusive news concerning Celtic’s search for a new manager to replace Ange Postecoglou, who last week left the club to take the Tottenham Hotspur job.

Plettenberg’s news is that Celtic have held talks with Daniel Farke, who is also in the running for the Leeds United job as the Yorkshire club look to get back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after being relegated this season. Daniel Farke previously got Norwich City promoted to the Premier League but this season after finishing tenth in the Bundesliga with Borussia Moenchengladbach, he was sacked, as indeed he was at Norwich.

That will obviously be one factor in his favour – if Celtic don’t have any compensation to pay and are appointing a manager who is good to go and also plays a similar style of football that Celtic have played over the past two seasons under Postecoglou.

“Exclusive News – Farke: Talks with Celtic FC! Celtic very interested in signing him as a replacement for Postecoglou. First talks took place. Next option: Leeds confirmed. But not advanced yet. Could change next week. Farke, ready to take over a new club now!” Plettenberg reported.

Farke’s brand of football didn’t get the results in the Premier league as yo-yo club Norwich soon found themselves back in the Championship with Farke paying the price for their relegation. After being sacked by Norwich, Farke had a short spell in Russia with Krasnodar before leaving due to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Farke then returned to home to Germany to take the Borussia Monchengladbach job, but was sacked earlier this month after just one season in charge. He worked under Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund and is highly regarded for the style of attacking football that would be well suited to Celtic.

However it should be noted that today’s news merely confirms Farke’s place on the Celtic shortlist – Dermot Desmond has previously revealed that the club will have five names in contention at this stage.

You can be pretty much certain that Plettenberg’s exclusive news was not sourced from the Celtic end of any talks between the club and Daniel Farke and if there was a realistic chance that he was in the frame for the job then talking to a Sky Sports Reporter wouldn’t be the cleverest tactic at this stage. If the intention is however to rattle Leeds United’s cage ahead of their talk with Farke then leaking news of talks with Celtic would do the trick.

That is a reasonable assumption on what’s happening here.
