Celtic Legend Chris Sutton – ‘The Evil Genius is 50 today’

Today is former Celtic striker, Chris Sutton’s birthday and it’s a special one as the big man turns 50! Sutton, who joined the Parkhead club back in the summer of 2000, enjoyed quite the career with the Hoops – becoming synonymous with the change in fortunes in the new millenium after the dark days of the nineties.

Paying a then massive transfer fee of £6million from Chelsea (where he was in the opinion of theRangers manager their worst player ever! Yet Martin O’Neill knew the Englishman just needed a new home where he would be loved and appreciated. After leaving Blackburn Rovers, the ex-Norwich City centre-forward struggled at Stamford Bridge and just couldn’t replicate the success he has achieved at Ewood Park.

The Northern Irishman wasted no time in offering the big striker a chance at redemption in Scottish football with a club that was in desperate need of a rebuild, following a decade of being usurped to silverware by our illegally spending rivals. Sutton came into the side straight away and made an instant impact, as he linked up wonderfully well with our Super Swede, Henrik Larsson.

His emphatic celebration after scoring against Rangers during the famous 6-2 game at Paradise, edeared the attacker to the Celtic faithful and set the stall out for many great battles with our fierce rivals afterwards. The service he gave the club throughout his tenure will never be forgotten, as he played his part in multiple League titles and domestic cups, as well as playing a key role in our UEFA Cup run to Seville, way back in 2003.

Now in punditry for BBC and BT Sports covering all things Scottish football, he can be heard regularly talking about his former club with deep affection and care. He always defends our honour and demands more from our custodians all of the time. He is a true living legend of this football club and his passion towards the Celtic supporters will endure the test of time.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
