Celtic On This Day – 10th January – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 10th January 1914…

Patsy Gallacher scored a hat-trick

SATURDAY 10 JANUARY 1914 – Even with a few reserves on duty, the magnificent Celtic team with Patsy Gallacher on song simply cannot be held by Dumbarton. 11,000 at Parkhead see Gallacher score a hat-trick and Peter Johnstone the other goal in a 4-0 dispatch of the men from Boghead.

Stevie Chalmers scored

WEDNESDAY 10 JANUARY 1962 – Celtic’s game at Cathkin Park seems to be heading for a 0-0 draw but Steve Chalmers looks likely to have given Celtic victory with a goal in the 89th minute. Scarcely have the celebrations died down, however, before Matt Gray equalises just at the final whistle for the hard-working Third Lanark.

Frank McGarvey scored

SATURDAY 10 JANUARY 1981 – Celtic have clearly turned over a new leaf since the New Year and today they have a fine 2-1 victory over potential title rivals Dundee United at Parkhead with goals from Frank McGarvey and Charlie Nicholas.

SATURDAY 10 JANUARY 1987 – Celtic are now clearly on the slippery slope to losing the Scottish League after a dreadful defensive performance today at a very cold Tannadice Park. They play well enough to win, or at least draw after Brian McClair had pulled them level at 2-2, but then the defence was nowhere in sight as Dundee United scored their winner.

John Hartson scored

SATURDAY 10 JANUARY 2004 – In subsequent years, Celtic fans would see a lot more of Ross County, but this Scottish Cup tie was the first that many fans would have seen the men from Dingwall. They played well on this cold and miserable day at Parkhead, but Celtic won 2-0 with goals from John Hartson and Paul Lambert, although Hartson’s goal looked like a foul.

David Potter

10 JANUARY 1998 – Motherwell 1:1 Celtic. a screamer from Paul Lambert to equalise for Celtic after Falconer gave Motherwell the lead. Celtic should have won it with a late penalty but Darren Jackson put it wide. Tommy Coyne, then of Motherwell, appears to be unhappy with Henrik Larsson about the spot kick incident.

Pierre van Hooijdonk, (back) Paolo Di Canio (7) celebrate with Jorge Cadete after scoring for Celtic

10 JANUARY 1995 – Pierre van Hooijdonk signs for Celtic.

10 JANUARY 2009 – Celtic beat Dundee by two goals to nil at Celtic Park with the goals coming from Scott Brown and Aiden McGeady.

10 January 2016 – Celtic win 3-0 away to Stranraer in the Scottish Cup with Leigh Griffiths scoring twice and Carlton Cole getting his Celtic goal.
