Celtic On This Day – 13th February – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic Diary each morning on The Celtic Star looks back at key Celtic events and matches on this day starting on 13th February 1904…

Jimmy McMenemy scored twice

SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 1904 – Celtic travel to Gymnasium Grounds Edinburgh to beat St Bernard’s 4-0 in the Scottish Cup. It is a dull game in the first half with neither side looking like scoring, but after a shower of rain at half time, Celtic take command, revelling in the wet conditions and score twice through Jimmy McMenemy and twice through Willie Orr.

SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 1915 – Greenock is a busy place in war time, and many men in uniform are seen in the large crowd which assembles today at Cappielow. But Celtic are too good for the home side and the 2-0 victory should really have been a lot more comfortable. Patsy Gallacher “danced in and scored a capital goal” as The Post which in later years will be called The Sunday Post puts it, and then Jimmy McColl scores a good goal in the second half. His ability to take goals from a distance is earning him the nickname “The Sniper”, but Celtic are still four points behind Hearts in the League race.

Jimmy McGrory scored twice

SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 1937 – Celtic travel to Cliftonhill, home of Albion Rovers where they beat the home side 5-2 in the Scottish Cup. Jimmy McGrory scores twice, Willie Buchan twice and Jimmy Delaney the other. And all this after Albion Rovers have twice been in the lead!

SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 1960 – A tremendous crowd of 36,000 are dangerously crowded into Love Street, Paisley to see a thrilling Cup tie played in bright sunshine but with traces of snow still on the pitch. St Mirren, of course, are the Cup holders having defeated Celtic in last year’s semi-final 4-0, and are possibly the favourites today. It is goalless at half-time but St Mirren go ahead half way through the second half, Celtic equalise through John Divers almost immediately, and that is the way that the game ends.

SUNDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2011 – Tannadice Park has often been a banana skin for Celtic in the past, so therefore the 3-1 win is all the more satisfying. Anthony Stokes and Mark Wilson put Celtic in front (both via deflections) but after Dundee United pull one back, Daniel Majstorovic puts the issue beyond any doubt. 11,414 all agree that the better team won.

I am a retired teacher and my other interests are cricket, drama and the poetry of Robert Burns. David Potter passed away on 29 July 2023 after a short illness. He was posthumously awarded a Special Recognition award by Celtic FC at the club's Player of the Year awards in May 2024. David's widow Rosemary accepted the award to huge applause from the Celtic Supporters in the Hydro.
